Customer Projects - Charles' Planters

Charles Freeman's Planter Project

Charles Freeman kindly shared photos and some text for his garden project with us, and we were amazed to see the outcome. Using our 3-Tier Straight and 3-Tier Corner brackets with stakes, he was able to produce 3 beautiful wooden planters. We'll let him speak from here on!

I used Indoor Outdoor's brackets to construct four raised beds each 8 feet by 3 feet. Having marked out the four corners for each raised bed I found the 3-tier Corner Railway Sleeper Bracket With Ground Stake easy to strike into the ground using a piece of wood across the top and a large mallet. I ensured that they were upright by using a 3-way spirit level. After a few attempts I soon got into the necessary technique to keep them upright. Once in the ground they were firm and square.

I wanted a substantial frame for the raised beds since I calculated that each would contain 1.5 tons of soil and I didn't want the raised bed frame to shift. Consequently I used 8 x 3 treated wood delivered in 4.8 metre lengths. Having purchased a slide chop saw it was relatively easy to cut the lengths and sides to shape and fix them to the brackets with 65mm Timber Railway Sleeper Screws. This job was made easier by purchasing an impact driver which, together with the supplied driver bit worked a dream. When completing jobs like this I always believe in buying the right tool for the job since it makes assembling the job easier, safer and the cost is way less than hiring someone to do the job for you. Once assembled the frames were very secure and looked impressive.

To further protect the wood I lined it with pond liner stapled to the wood. In order to ensure that the frame did not move at all once the soil was in I used a 3-tier Straight Railway Sleeper Bracket With Stake halfway down each long side of the beds. I then removed the planks at one end of each bed to facilitate wheeling the soil straight into the bed rather than having to lift the soil over the height of the bed. After replacing the planks at the end of filling the beds were complete and looked amazing. Thanks to the well designed brackets the outside of the beds look clean, neat and tidy.

One final point at 74 I was pleased to still be able to plan and carry out this project. The satisfaction of doing it yourself is a great motivator.

Thank you Charles for telling us your story and for the fantastic photos.
